Spudder

Did you know that a U Boat from WW II was just recently discovered off the cost of New Jersey in 1991? It took 6 or 7 years just to identify the wreckage. We listened to part of a book on cd about it on our way up to Idaho for the Spudman. The book, Shadow Divers, had too much bad language, so we quit listening and I googled to find out what happened. It was U Boat 869. Very interesting, was a great story, too bad it had more f-words than I could handle.

So...for the 7th time in my life, Mark's 4th, we went up to Idaho for the Spudman triathlon. Sometimes I think "why are we up here? what is the big deal?". Then the sunsets/rises and we see the Snake river. Its beautiful, and you are guaranteed to see people you know. It's a really great race. Siri and I cheered Mark on, he took 10th place in his division (out of 83) and I'm very proud of him. He didn't train, which I admire since he stays in good shape from skateboarding and working in the garden.

Siri was adamant about wearing her goggles (like dad). She fell asleep with them on :)

We had a big family party at our house with all of my mom's side of the family. We worked really hard in the garden/yard to make things look great, and it paid off. It was a prefect party-good food and good company. Siri didn't nap that day and ate way too much caramel popcorn. She was happy.

This pic is so funny. Siri and her cousin Sam glued to the TV watching Baby Signing Time

Mark's mom, Sandy, gets Siri the cutest clothes. She looked like a doll at church yesterday.

See those plants around me. Those are giant Sunflowers. I planted them from seed this spring. They are just getting their flowers and should be blooming soon. They are HUGE!

We've made 2 rounds of basil pesto so far and have tomatoes ripening. Joy.

Siri put on my running shoes. She told me she was going to run to the temple and the park.

We go play with Grandma Sandy about once a week. She spoils Siri, doing whatever she wants to do, including playing with the hose on the slide with her doll and Charlie the dog.

Tonight I made mixed greens with baked goat cheese and roasted red pepper vinaigrette. Along with roasted garlic bread, watermelon and blueberries. Luckily Liz Dan Sam could come over to enjoy it with us. I highly recommend that recipe, especially if you love goat cheese (I get mine at Costco).

I'm almost done reading In Defense of Food: an eaters manifesto. If you think and care about what you eat (sometimes I worry I think about it too much), you will really be interested in this book. It talks about nutrition science and the food industry, both of which seem to do us more harm than good. I love the example he gives of Sara Lee's Soft & Smooth Whole Grain White Bread "Wait a minute-isn't whole grain white bread a contradiction in terms? Evidently not any more". He talks about how many "foods" in the grocery store are not food. Personally, I agree...I just saw an add for fruity pebbles cupcake cereal. Are you kidding me?! There is a lot more to it, so just go get it from the library and read it.
