Your help

A boy that goes to the girls' elementary school passed away last week in a car accident. He was 7. Monday our neighbor's son passed away in a snowmobile accident. He was 12.  So very sad. But I write this to remind us all of the life we do have today. Let us make it a good day and be thankful!

Ruby is turning 4 next week and I want to put together a scrapbook for her...something for her (and us as a family) to look through to help us remember all the people cheering us on. So, I need your help!

If you don't have time to make/mail a page to us, you can email me a picture of you/your family and I'll print it out to add to the book :)

are you serious

Hi people.

As I type this Annie is snoozing in the baby bjorn on me. S & J went with Mark to get Ruby...Bridget stood in for me and took her to see Sleeping Beauty thanks the kind and generous Make A Wish!

waiting for the elevator to the 4th floor of Primarys
she knows the hospital better than Grandmas house

Ruby's infusion went really well Tuesday. Boring. Boring is good.
peeling the 'press n seal' off her port area.
we put on lidocaine cream before each visit to help numb the area.

as calm as she is, there is still that look of worry or fear in her eyes that breaks my heart

Thursday with Annie. Pulmonologist was pretty much in line with her pediatrician...he'd like her above 90 all the time, but is ok if we take her off ...as long as she doesn't drop. So we're just going to keep doing what we're doing. O2 at night and do a test every couple weeks or so. Her last test was the best yet though I was so happy! Only 2.3% below 90. And like the dr said...if we didn't have the technology of meter, you'd never know anything was wrong. This comforts me.

But.

Then we did the swallow study with a Speech Pathologist. They had me put Annie in a seat, reclined just a bit, then give her barium, a "soft silvery metallic alkaline earth metal" that shows up in xrays, mixed w water in a bottle. Turn on the x ray for a few seconds and watch her swallow.  The liquid would go a little ways down the 'wrong tube' (the one to her lungs) then back up and down to her stomach. Because this happened at least 1/2 the time, the dr thinks she is aspirating (fluid getting in her lungs). She told me her liquids need to be thickened to help it go slower down her throat so her body has time to react and shut off her airway to it will go right to her stomach. She's not sure why its happening...maybe Annie just need to develop more, genetics, neurological.

Wait a second. So I can't breastfeed? Right, she said. So are you saying it would be dangerous for me to breastfeed her? Yes.

Uhhhh. That sounds like I really hate that answer. Breastfeeding can seem inconvenient, but its also how God made us to keep our babies alive. And I can't feed her like that? Right. So I can pump and thicken it or use formula and thicken it. The thickener was $37 for what seems like a small container.   If this is what I have to do for her, I'll do it. But I haven't felt like this is for sure what should be done. So we've been feeding her bottles w thickener, and I've been on Facebook messaging back and forth with someone from the La Leche League to help advise me. I'm going to call an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) that works at Primarys and see what she says. I know the Speech Pathologist is an expert, but if you told me she didn't have any kids and has never breastfed I'd believe you.  I think the Speech Pathologist thought the Pulmonologist sent us to her so she is thinking he thinks her eating is related to her oxygen. But he didn't...it was a suggestion from the pediatrician to do the swallow study. Either way I wish all the individuals doctors could chat real quick and see if I really am doing what I need to for Annie.

In other news, Mark still makes amazing lasagna, I love my ward, and loved seeing my Van Dorn cousins today at a baby shower!

true colors

This afternoon I danced to this song in the hallway and kitchen with Annie.
One day I'll take dance lessons and make it more graceful :) For today I hang on to that moment of love and sunshine with my little baby.

I've felt like she's been doing better lately. Her color is good, more smiling. I think she likes it here on earth :)  But then I get a call tonight from the pediatrician "maybe we should put her back on oxygen 24/7 instead of just at night..."  And then my mind gets all worried. Deep breaths, trust myself. I'm the mom, I know her better than anyone. Before he had called me though I made an appt with a pulmonologist, just to get an experts opinion and advice. I also scheduled a swallow study, to be sure she's not aspirating or anything.  I'm hoping to knock out both those appointments Thursday morning (fingers cross the first one starts on time so I can make it to the second).

I'll also be up there tomorrow with the lovely miss Ruby. Who is crazy awesome by the way. She can't wait to go.  WE ARE BEYOND BLESSED. Who gets to have a kid go through all she has, then get diagnosed with cancer, and be excited to go 'my hospital' as she calls it? It may not always be like this, but for now I am SO very thankful that this is not hard for her.  For me, as I set the alarm on my phone for 'port cream' tomorrow morning (the cream we put on the spot they access her port so she can't feel the poke of the needle) I got kinda worn out. Can we be done with this yet?  No, not yet. Keep on keeping on. Enjoy the journey. Yes, we'll do that. Thank you God for letting Ruby still be with us. And now the tears come as I type this. I love her and I love my family as a whole, each person in it, what we are together.

Open your heart and love those around you. Each of us only has so much time on this earth. I write this to remember to take my own advice :)

Happy Valentines.

What 3 year old likes to take a stroll while being infused with meds?
she's amazing.

this was last week. for the first time, she asked me to take a picture of her neck. Its usually out of sight out of mind, but she is becoming more aware and understanding.

She smiles and plays and is silly. I'm so very thankful for her. I'm thankful she hasn't had to do chemo or radiation. No side effects so far from this immunotherapy. We get to be home.

A neighbor of ours has a teenage daughter who has been fighting for her life and is likely in her last days right now. Let's hug each other a little longer and be thankful for what we have.
